Teaching and learning
Conference introduction by Dr Tristian Stobie
As our community grows we are holding more schools’ conferences. This will be our final conference exploring the theme 'Leading learning'. We have chosen a theme that is fundamental to all. Schools exist to maximise student learning and develop students who are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative and engaged. Everyone in a school, the principal, teachers and students alike, need to be leaders of learning. What this means in practice will be the focus of this conference.
From the point of view of the principal, leadership includes the responsibility of getting the best out of the system, creating the conditions necessary for every individual’s potential to be realised. The role of the teacher as leader is fundamental in leading innovation in the school and improving their own and their institution’s professional practice. This includes establishing an excellent learning climate, high expectations and challenging goals as well as focusing on effective instructional strategies, clear learning objectives and promoting and participating in professional development. In a world of constant change students have to learn to cope with uncertainty well and be life-long reflective learners with the resilience and self-understanding to adapt and evolve, or in other words be leaders of their own learning.
As always at our conferences, ideas will be presented by plenary speakers and in breakout sessions. The greatest learning will, however, come from sharing and reflecting on your own professional practice. The main purpose of our conferences is to bring together representatives from our global community of schools and develop our collective wisdom. At Cambridge we want to hear how we can better serve you and you will also have an opportunity to learn about the developments we are planning.
