Teaching and learning
In line with technology developments that have affected the home and work place, there is an increased use of technology for teaching and learning within schools around the world. As the use of technology in the classroom develops our aim is to ensure that our approach to assessment reflects the way teaching and learning is taking place in schools.
We have consulted with our schools and, as a result, from 2016 we are starting to introduce optional on-screen assessments. We started in October 2016 with the introduction of on-screen versions of our Cambridge Secondary 1 Checkpoint tests in Science.
To ensure we are developing on-screen assessments that meet the needs of teachers and students we are building a network of schools to run trials before we launch our on-screen offer to our wider school community. Cambridge on-screen assessments will be introduced over a number of years. Our innovations in this area will be led by good practice rather than just what is technologically possible.
What’s happening to paper-based assessments?
Schools will continue to have the option of paper-based assessments. Our on-screen assessments will be available as optional alternatives. This will enable our schools to choose the assessment that is most appropriate for their students.
What will be available when?
Cambridge Secondary 1 Checkpoint tests
In October 2016 we introduced on-screen versions of our Cambridge Secondary 1 Checkpoint tests in Science. In May 2017 we will add Cambridge Secondary 1 Checkpoint English to this. In these first exam series the on-screen tests will be available to those schools that have expressed interest in offering them. If you would like to offer Cambridge Secondary 1 Checkpoint on-screen tests in the May or October 2017 exam series, please complete the on-screen tests Expression of Interest form.
We will continue to offer paper-based versions of Cambridge Secondary 1 Checkpoint tests.
Cambridge Progression Tests
In October 2017 newly revised versions of all our progression tests for Cambridge Secondary 1 will be available on-screen and on-paper. These tests are on-screen alternatives to the existing paper based progression tests.
Our new Cambridge Primary and Secondary 1 sites will launch in Spring 2017. These revised websites will provide feedback for on-screen and on-paper progression tests. We are keeping the features our schools value and improving the functionality and design. Schools will also be able to produce more detailed reports that highlight strengths and weaknesses of their students across the topics they are studying - helping teachers to track student progress. Find out more about the new sites.
Following the launch of on-screen progression tests we will continue to trial on-screen tests to support teaching and learning in the classroom. We will use the experience and feedback from our schools to develop our on-screen offer for Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS & A Level.
